“Our gaze travels through space and gives us the illusion of relief and
distance. That is how we construct space,
with an up and a down,
a left and a right,
an in front and a behind,
a near and a far.
When nothing arrests our gaze, it carries a very long way.”

“Species of Spaces and Other Piece“, Georges Perec, 1974

The theme was the creation of space by the scenic performance of a text fragment displaying a real, symbolic and theatrical room.
The space around us serves as a stage for us every day. The theatre is a place where reality meets imagination.
State designs and stage performances were developed based on text fragments of Georges Perec “Species of Spaces and Other Pieces“ published in 1974.

Text fragments:
“To live means, steps from one room to another”
“We don't think enough of staircases”
“Given is a wall, longer know what there is behind it?”
“Bed = Island”

In a first step students had to develop ideas for visualizing a text fragment independently – each by him- or herself. They could choose the media they liked. In a second phase they had to work together in groups of five. More than twenty stage settings were designed and constructed and a short scene was rehearsed. Finally the results were performed in front of an audience.

WORKSHOP winter term 2013/14
“Objects to Dwell Upon”

Urban space, architecture and all objects of our daily life are able to manipulate our perception of time. They can speed up, slow down, give rhythm, freeze - they have an effect.
Long before we can understand or capture more precise sequences, space, landscape or urban environment with their own character are imprinted on us. We absorb our living space with our five senses, i.e. not only by seeing, but also by hearing, tasting, touching and smelling.
The “objects to dwell upon” was planned as a furniture design from the first idea through sketches, small models in the scale 1:10 over prototypes with sample details up to the finished piece of furniture in a scale of 1: 1. The aim of this workshop was to design a furniture object independently and to build it solely from cardboard and cable ties.
